More Trouble with Annie

by Brian Shaw

Workworth was a perfect place to explore the Northumbrian coast, central to the area we wanted to explore. The b&b couldnt be better a warm friendly base to retire back to after each days exploration with Annie. The weather through our week varied but mainly dry and breezy so no problems to deter us in our travels.

The first couple of days we discovered the many coastal gems we'd only read about, quaint fishing villages that are still as busy now in these days of the run down of our fishing industry. Jean is in her element as theres castles everywhere she's always been into the aincent Royal links in the different areas we explore.

First couple of days Annie running perfect then each time her revs drop to tickover she stops & not easy to restart untill I flood her carb, when she restarts she pulls perfect but getting a nuisance avin to get out , bonnet up & tickle her again. I only carry the minimum of tools in Annie as we never have any trouble so it was a guardian angel find when we were told of a man in Seahouses who new a bit about Austin 7s, this is how we found Annie heading to David's well equipped garage with his array of tools & his vast knowledge of our marque.

Carburrettor all stripped down & cleaned out he even had his mate come round from across the road to give us a hand. After Davids luvly wife made us tea we put Annies bits back together & we were heading down the coast again to our b&b.

All thru the week we encountered problems with Annies fuel side, on tickover she'd stop & always reluctant to start until id flooded her carb, couldn't find any bits or muck in the bowl or jets but once flooded she'd run ok. I nursed her along for the rest of our weeks holiday promising myself to sort it out properly when we got home.

The homeward journey caused us no real trouble & on getting back to Melton checked the mileage 974miles not bad for a 77 year old lady. After checking her over fully the problems turned out to be the tank seal I did 20 odd years ago is coming away from the inside of the tank walls in large pieces that are floating about in the tank & fouling the outlet pipe. The problem now is I haven't found anything yet to fully remove the sealant completely before resealing with new product, in the last resort I'll cut the back of the tank out so as to be able to get the job done properly..
